Frequently Asked Questions

What Is EdTech?

EdTech is an abbreviation of ‘education technology’, which combines educational theory and practice with computer software and hardware. At its core, EdTech aims to create, use, and manage educational resources and technological processes to improve academic performance – essentially, its objective is to create technologies that support education.

EdTech can take many different forms and media, such as audio, image based, animation, video, and text, as well as rich interactive experiences and AI driven coaching, offering more dynamic and effective learning that is well-suited to distance learning. Currently, EdTech is still in a nascent stage in Europe, with plenty of room for further developments and innovations. The field shows lots of promise, among others offering ways to personalise curricula to each individual student, altering teaching to best suit their ability level and optimal pace.

As hardware and highspeed broadband penetration increases apace in schools and universities, these software and services become ubiquitous and fall into common usage, replacing legacy systems with better, faster and cheaper options, thereby improving access for all.

What Theory Is at the Core of EdTech?

The theory on the one hand is that technology and connectivity can massively improve the distribution of learning experiences whilst lowering costs, thereby reducing barriers to entry to different disciplines and allowing for equitable access across society and the world. On the other hand the theory is also that interactive experiences that either leverage gamification, or use artificial intelligence to help design, match and deliver content ‘just in time’ to the learners needs, can improve engagement and retention of knowledge, allowing people to acquire coveted skills more rapidly and with more ease.

What Are the Objectives of EdTech?

The primary focus of EdTech is to enhance and improve the process of teaching and learning, which it achieves through the use of technology. By using technology as an educational tool – and by considering and analysing the teaching/learning process – EdTech hopes to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness in education.

EdTech uses technological advances in a positive manner within the field of education, in order to promote a more diverse learning environment and offer students a more technologically advanced way to learn.
